2002 - 2003

Teaching

In the fall, we made the decision as a program to focus significant attention on developing our virtual teaching world – AppEdTech (AET) – as a viable instructional environment.  I taught 12 courses this year.  Each had a portion delivered via AET.  In the spring, I introduced AET as the primary environment for course content and interactions with my Integration course.  My course evaluations for the fall and the spring suggested high student satisfaction with my teaching and the quality of the courses.  Personally, I found the new ways of interacting with students and supporting hands-on project-based learning that teaching in the virtual world affords very exciting.

Scholarship

I spent a significant amount of time this year investigating the NC Annual Media and Technology Reports from the Department of Public Instruction.  In conjunction with a survey for technology directors developed with Dr. Riedl and Dr. Tashner, I developing systemic profiles of area LEAs as they relate to their ability to support and to sustain technology-rich teaching and learning activities.  I shared my review with my students and colleagues via a brief entitled "The State of Technology in NC Public Schools: A Brief on AMTR 2003.

Creative / Scholarly Activities

I spent a lot of time in 2002-2003 developing new tools to use on my website for interacting with my students.  I introduced an online course evaluation form, a web-based messaging console, and a web-based note-taking tool for students to use in my courses.  Together, I called these tools "Olie."  I experimented with them in my courses, as did Dr. Olson with some of his students.  These served as the core of what would eventually become LESOnline.

Service

Faculty Development

I was part of the ARTTA group that traveled to Albuquerque in the spring to attend the SITE conference.  My involvement ultimately led me to collaborate with Dr. Moorman on the crafting of the first SALT grant RFP for the college.

International

I presented a paper at the Mediterranean Association of International Schools in Rome, Italy and the International Conference on New Educational Environments in Lucerne, Switzerland.
