2003 - 2004
Teaching
I taught 12 courses between Summer 2003 and Fall 2004. All of my courses included some web-based component – at least one was completely web-based. All of my courses were integrated into AppEdTech, the ASU Instructional Technology program’s 3D virtual campus, by Spring 2004. My course evaluations continued to suggest strong student satisfaction with the content and process of my courses.
In 2003-2004, I had 55 advisees.
Scholarship
Formal and Funded Projects
I collaborated with Dr. Alice Naylor on an Appalachian State University Strategic Application for Learning Technologies program grant which funded our “The RCOE Doctoral Program and Alternative Delivery Systems” study. We employed a mixed-method investigation of the use of emerging technologies for delivery of the doctoral program in Educational Leadership. An analysis of survey results is available here.
Formal and Non-Funded
I collaborated with Drs., Riedl, Tashner, Greene, and Zimmerman on a survey of local school districts’ permissible technology practices in K-12 schools. The results of our survey were shared at SITE and are linked, below.

Service
Instructional or Faculty Development Activities
I served as an external advisor for technology for Marymount International School in Rome, Italy.
Departmental Activities Dealing with Curricular Changes or Activities Related to the Mission of the Department
I continued this year to develop our presence within AppEdTech. I have begun work on converting our department-level course evaluation into web-based format, for easier collection of course evaluations for our off-campus / online courses.
Creative / Scholarly Activities
I continue to write research briefs for our students. This year, I wrote Where Students Get Connected: A Brief on Computer and Internet Use by Young Americans.
Student Activities excluding formal instruction and advisement
I wrote a program - called "WordFlash" - for one of our doctoral students (Beth Frye) to help her collect her data for her dissertation. A more detailed description of WordFlash - and other web-based products I've created - is available on the products page.
Cooperation With or Assistance to Public Schools
I coached a K-2 Odyssey of the Mind team for Hardin Park School in the fall. At the K-2 level, it is a demonstration-only competition. That is, teams are not "judged" against each other. Instead, they are evaluated against a set of established criteria that each project must meet. For this competition, teams were instructed to create a humorous story with a main character and at least 3 jokes - one of which must be original. Additionally, the teams were to "act out" the story from the end, then the middle, and finishing with the beginning. Our team consisted of 7 Kindergartners and 1st-graders from HPS. I have included copies of my initial letter home, as well as letter detailing schedules and other progress reports. Ultimately, the team came up with a story called "A Fish Who Couldn't Swim," and they performed well at the regionals in Greensboro, North Carolina.
