2004 - 2005
Teaching
I taught 3 courses in Summer 2004, 3 courses in Fall 2005 and 4 courses in Spring 2005--all of them off-campus. All of my courses included some web-based component – but none were completely web-based. All of my courses are integrated into AppEdTech, the ASU Instructional Technology program’s 3D virtual campus. My course evaluations continued to suggest strong student satisfaction with the content and process of my courses.
In 2004-2005, I had 65 advisees.
Scholarship
Formal and Non-Funded Projects
I worked with Roma Angel and doctoral student Stephen Martin throughout the year designing, developing, and testing a web-based survey of technology use, comfort, and planning decisions among principals in the LEAs within the ALA. In the spring, we initiated a pilot study and analysis of these data is on-going.

Proposals for External Funding
I submitted 2 proposals for external funding this year. One was through the SALT program (unfunded). The other was entitled "InSINC: Innovative Science Inquiry Across North Carolina." (unfunded). The goal of InSINC was to bring together teachers and students from rural middle schools in eastern, central, and western NC and introduce immersive gaming into the science curriculum to promote learning through the development of supplemental social games. The proposal was submitted to the Burroughs/Wellcome Foundation. I was listed as a co-PI with colleagues at NCSU and UNC-W.
Service
Instructional or Faculty Development Activities
In the fall, I worked with Geri Purpur from ASU Belk Library to design and develop the AET Library: a building that interfaces with the distance education services provided by the ASU Belk Library. The AET Library has links to online journals, searchable databases, the ASU Writing Center, grant writing tips, student library accounts, and the Instructional Materials Center. Six days per week, a distance education librarian is logged on and available within the AET Library for consultation via text- and audio chats.
Creative / Scholarly Activities
In April 2005, I completed the first census of AppEdTech. I cataloged all citizens who have been activated since the inception of AET (2002) until Spring 2005. Roughly 3 years after launching - there were 550 AET citizens. The average citizen had spent a total of 2 days, 3 hours, 2 minutes and 52 seconds over the course of 6 1/2 months for an average of about 23 minutes per day - or just under 8 hours per month - in world. However, roughly one-third of all Aet'ers at this point had been citizens for 3 months or less.
